If you like watching TV but hate cable companies, Hulu Plus is a good alternative. Unlike Netflix, the highlight of this application is its wide selection of current TV shows. At $7.99 it is a pretty good value when compared to what you pay for cable. The only problem with the price is that there are still commercials. One could make the argument that when paying for cable TV you get commercials, but I find it ridiculous that this has advertisements when compared to another paid video service on Wii. The layout is confusing at first but after a little bit of time using it it becomes easy to navigate. Sometimes the videos stop working but most of the time it runs smoothly. The video quality is standard definition because it is on the Wii but it still looks nice. If you do decide to try Hulu out I have a few recommendations:
- Community: This NBC comedy is the ultimate nerd comedy with pop culture references ranging from Anime, video games (one of the characters wears a De Blob shirt in one episode), and everything else people like me like.
- Family Guy: While some South Park fans may lead you to believe this is a stupid show, I find it to be quite enjoyable. South Park is also good and is also on Hulu Plus though. By far the best episodes are their Star Wars parodies.
- Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope: This movie directed by famed Super Size Me director Morgan Spurlock, follows multiple people at Comic-Con to showcase the unique convention experience that only SDCC offers. If you are looking for somthing gaming related one part of the movie follows some Mass Effect cosplayers.
As a side note Hulu Plus is also coming to the 3DS.

I enjoy a good documentary, and Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope is something I've wanted to see for awhile now. Too bad Hulu Plus isn't in Canada on the Wii. :(
ReplyDeleteYou can watch it online on Hulu but you need a Hulu Plus subscription, though you could sign up for a free trial.
DeleteFar out, Australia misses out on everything....
ReplyDeleteMy brother subscribes to this instead of cable. They complain about the oft repeat ads, but if the ads mean the cost is lower, then I think it's worth it.
ReplyDeleteThe interface is a bit slow (not just on Wii, either). I'm not sure what extra content you actually get out of a plus subscription versus just using the free version online, so I'd need to look into that more.
